UDHA supports maternal and child health through community outreach, antenatal care promotion, nutrition interventions, and safe birth initiatives. Community health workers and village health teams play a key role in household engagement and health education.

Recognizing the link between economic vulnerability and health risks, UDHA supports youth livelihood initiatives including vocational skills development, financial inclusion through Village Savings and Loans Associations (VSLAs), mentorship through local artisans, and enterprise development opportunities for young people. In a partnership with GlobeMed at Washington University in St. Louis in 2010, we initiated a community-based nutrition program for children and young mothers in the Luuka and Iganga Districts. This included a selected team of volunteers to carry out growth monitoring and promotion, as well as encourage backyard farming through village demonstration gardens. Over time, this developed to also encompass antenatal and postnatal care in Naigoyba Health Center III. These health centers provide maternity services, immunizations, and nutritional supplements geared to preventing malnutrition in young children and new mothers, as well as the local population. Along with the dedicated health staff, Community Health Workers (CHWs) also contribute to home visits, providing care and maternal health information from village to village for those who cannot access hospital resources.
